Session 9: High Hoooooo!

Time: 7/24/22-7/28/22, rest 7/29/22, active 7/30/22

PCs: Gwendolyn (bard), Max (barbarian), Redcorn (cleric), Grim (assassin)

Hench: Cemil (Fighter)

Team A started the session with some downtime cleanup then found themselves in Newbridge. They also picked up our newest player’s PC. Luther (Hench Issac) found the party in The Rose and offered them a patrolling mission on behalf of Issac (Patron), who had been moving troops and supplies across the river to the north in order to do army things. What’s important is that he was offering big bucks to patrol many cleared lairs in the army’s path and keep the supply line clear, which sounded like easy money to the Team so off they went.

The Patrons have been kind so far with loaning resources to the party and this time was no exception, Issac loaning out his explorer Kit to guide them to the lairs. The team patrolled their way through enemy territory and recently cleared lairs, finding a warband of Flannish nomads led by Red Dawn, who was unimpressed with Redcorn’s inability to speak the native tongue. The party warned them to stay clear of the supply chain and the nomads seemed to oblige. They also ran across a group of foraging White Apes, one of which Redcorn was able to hench with the help of Grim’s ability to hunt down some food and the Speak with Animals spell. Magilla the Gorilla was pickin’ up what they were puttin’ down. Literally. Like coyote meat and berries and shit. Bribery works.

When they arrived at Lord Issac’s warcamp, they cashed out for the day’s patrolling that they had already done and received a new mission to seek out and find a Sinkhole of Evil that Sebastian (hench Issac) had sensed near a dragon lair that the army had recently cleared. The party investigated the swampy valley and found a crevice in the back wall that led into a sealed crypt through a broken wall, an eerie cold emanating from the area.

The party crept through the small crevice, Redcorn’s Detect Evil spell radiating pretty strongly. They entered the large crypt which was made entirely of black marble, floor, ceiling, walls, columns, everything and found a truly bizarre ambient blacklight reminiscent of a teenager’s first dance with Mary Jane. Torches were thrown about to try to get real light and about that time ghouls burst from the shadows and sarcophagi. The lighting must have thrown off our bold adventurers as several were caught by surprise.

It was a narrow victory that hinged on the cleric’s ability to Turn Undead, as most fights involving undead do. Most of the party was paralyzed, but Gwendolyn, Cemil, and Redcorn lasted long enough to break Max loose of his paralysis and finish off the cowering ghouls. They sent Kit back to get Sebastian for the cleansing while they looted the graves, coming up with a solid score. Sebastian arrived, Max shattered the central idol, and the Heironeous cleric cleansed the area, breaking the cold enchantment and dispersing the blacklight. He dismissed the party and stayed behind to investigate the area for unknown reasons.

The party returned to the warcamp, healed and camped, then went back on patrol the next day. They returned to Red Dawn’s nomads and gifted them some fur clothing they found in the crypt. Redcorn Snake-Charmed a pit viper just to see what it would do, then they arrived in Riverstride and rested.

Back on the road the next day, the party ran across two travelers seeking the Barony of Oberholt, one a Rhenee cleric of Ehlonna named Luciana and the other a Baklunish wanderer named Yata-amir. They warned them not to cause trouble and sent them on their way. They did find a pair of Skittering Maws that were snuffling around one of the vacant lairs, but the party surprised them and was able to evade an encounter. Redcorn rushed off on his hippogriff and in short order Hess (hench Issac) arrived with overwhelming force and rode the weird sharky centipede creatures down.

The rest of the day’s patrol was uneventful, they camped at the forward base, then patrolled the next day back to Riverstride with no events.

Musings:

Patrons are driving my game. Love to see the creativity and organic nature of the choices that are made in both downtime and in session. This session became a bit work-a-day as they were really just patrolling the same few hexes, but even those random encounters are opportunities for organic hooks to crop up. As Issac’s situation changed in the field, so did his priorities and hooks offered to the party. Really led to a profitable time for the PCs and some peace of mind for Issac. Stay tuned to see what happens on the wild side of the river.
