Session 14: The Baying of Wolves

Time: 9/5/22 - 9/15/22, active 9/16/22 (extended into downtime)

PCs: Gwendolyn, Max, Redcorn, Grim

Hench: Amadayo, Iylul, Paulus, Nona

Team A used their last session and downtime to prepare to return to the werewolf dungeon by borrowing and buying magic and silvered weapons from Captain Wicker of Headford and in Bellport. They returned immediately to the tower where they had encountered the werewolves before, but this time the wolves were not howling. They debated how to force entry and eventually settled on Max throwing a big rock at the front door, which was shoddily repaired after their previous breaking and entering. The door slammed open and a big bucket of glass and rocks fell to the ground. Combined with the projectile skittering down the hallway, this made quite the racket. No big deal.

The party entered and proceeded to the main chamber in the center of the first floor, discovering a bloody trail of troglodyte limbs and coins leading to a closed double door across from them. They determined that the wolves had to be on the basement floor so instead of investigating the blood trail they prepared to descend the stairwell leading to what they knew to be some kind of ritual circle in the level below them.

As they prepared with buffs and such, their castings gave away their presence, the wolves underneath on high alert after the nature of the entry. They howled and howled and charged up the stairs. This also was the signal for their goblin allies to ambush from side corridors that the party had investigated but unfortunately had not heard any noise from.

The fight was on and hinged pretty exclusively on the plan of Redcorn being able to successfully cast a protection from evil spell. The enemy beat him on initiative but could not reach him through the mass of henchmen and animals, so the goblins opted to throw spears at him while the werewolves attacked the party’s front line. None of the spears hit so his spell was successful and the rest of the fight was the werewolves realizing that they couldn’t hit anyone and the goblins being massacred by mountain lions, a dire wolf, and Paulus.

The werewolves fled once realizing they couldn’t hit through the spell and were chased, eventually knocked down and hawked down by the animals and Max’s spear. The remaining wolf tried to unleash other denizens of the dungeon but could not make enough distance between Max and himself. The zombies he was able to release were easily turned by the cleric and the fight was essentially over.

The party debated clearing the 1st level completely or searching for the werewolves’ stash of treasure on the 2nd floor and opted for the latter, finding a huge basement chamber containing an old library, a weird ritual circle, and a shrine to Nerull with an elongated skull motif used in white paints and blood. After a while spent searching for secret doors, Max found a button on the shrine and pressed it, releasing a concealed door and revealing the sought after loot. Much time was spent searching, counting, and stowing treasure but there were no random encounters. They discussed destroying the shrine briefly but with nothing to gain opted to leave it be. The party marched on out of there victorious, collecting their reward from Captain Wicker and heading back to Bellport to shop.

Musings:

This was the first random dungeon that I had generated, a small one to test the rules out, and it seemed to do the trick. Two good sessions of play, a solid haul for the victors, and some interesting interaction and planning to overcome the primary threat. The party is starting to hire henchmen more regularly and looking to fill in gaps in their skill sets, which is smart. Redcorn is also attempting to convert to Law over Neutrality, so we’re exploring those options in downtime. I can’t wait to see what they do next.

I missed the entry in the pro evil spell that breaks it if you attack from it. Conveniently so did the caster. It's the little things. Reading the rules is magical!
